The tension and excitement in the air were palpable on Saturday morning as upwards of 50 of the worlds best UTV racers prepared to take on each other and the Laughlin landscape in the Walker Evans Desert Championship. As the racers staged under the morning sun many were battling the nerves associated with the only land-rush start in desert UTV racing, racing into the first corner wheel to wheel requires courage, grit, and a little luck. The starts went off with little carnage and the racers took to the 17-mile loop at full speed in pursuit of the victory and the glory that comes with it.
The first sign of the racers from the spectator area is the sound of the helicopter growing nearer and nearer. Soon after you can make out the dust trails and finally the leaders spill into the infield for all to see. After the lap 1 shuffle #1913 Branden Sims would come through in first place with the #1921 of Johnny Angal leading the chase. Branden would take advantage of that clean air and run a nearly flawless race. Many racers succumbed to the desert and carnage was always plentiful in the dusty sections. A few racers would mount a charge, but ultimately Sims bested the biggest names in the sport and brought home the prize package including a brand new Polaris RZR XP1000.
Christina Perkins from Bakersfield, Ca also had an impressive run in the desert race, pushing the #1946 hard all race and pulling off a second place. Christina is not only a great female ambassador for the sport but she is also mechanical engineer. Paul Cooper would lay claim to the final podium position in the #1906 Cognito, Sparks, Baja Designs XP1000.
