Sweeps Shape LOORRS Weekend at Wild Horse Pass, Set Up Epic Glen Helen Finale
It was pure domination across some of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series’ five premier classes at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park over the weekend, as three different drivers swept three Pro races each to claim heavy momentum going into the season finale at Glen Helen Raceway later this fall. Both Ronnie Anderson (Turbo) and Myles Cheek (Production 1000) earned victories in all three UTV events, but Elliot Watson continued to be the story of the year as he swept his second consecutive tripleheader in Pro Buggy.
For Anderson, the Turbo UTV sweep wasn’t just huge in the points, as it enabled him to pull ahead of defending series champion Corry Weller. It was also the culmination of a five-podium weekend, as he added second and third-place finishes in the Friday and Saturday Pro Lite rounds. Only Brock Heger could match Anderson’s trophy haul, scoring three straight runner-up results to Cheek in P1000 action, and beating Anderson in both of those Pro Lite races. Neither could crack the Sunday Pro Lite podium, though, as Cole Mamer, Madix Bailey, and Jimmy Weitzel swept the top three spots in the weekend finale.
Watson, meanwhile, all but inscribed his name on his second consecutive Pro Buggy title by extending his win streak to six. If that wasn’t enough, only Trey Gibbs managed to score two podiums in the class behind him, finishing third on Friday and second on Sunday. Darren Hardesty Jr., Matthew Brister, Dale Ebberts, and Brady Whitlock split the rest of the class trophy haul.
Wrapping up each race day, the headline Pro 2 class was fairly evenly matched. Doug Mittag was the only driver to take podiums on all three days, but each saw him on the second step of the podium. Instead, incoming points leader Jerett Brooks was the Friday and Sunday winner, while Ryan Beat scored the Saturday win before adding a third place result on Sunday. RJ Anderson’s back-to-back third places to start the weekend made him the fourth and final driver to earn podiums on the weekend.
In the youth classes, Connor Barry extended his Mod Kart points lead with back-to-back wins to kick things off, but David Gasper finished the weekend by claiming the third checkered flag. George Llamosas set the tone for all the weekend sweeps by doing so in RZR 170, leaving only the JR2 Kart field to crown three separate winners on the weekend. Brothers Talan and Brodie Martin earned one win each, with Lake Adler splitting them on Saturday.
The 2020 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season ends at Glen Helen Raceway on October 16-18, with the final day of racing serving as the annual Lucas Oil Challenge Cup. Fans looking to catch LOORRS on TV can see the Pro 2 and Pro Buggy season openers from Glen Helen on Wednesday at 9PM ET on MAVTV, while the series returns to CBS this Saturday at 12PM ET with Pro 2 and Pro Lite action from Lucas Oil Raceway last month. Action from Wild Horse Pass makes its TV debut on CBS on Saturday, November 21.
