For the fourth consecutive year, a Can-Am took top honors in the Can-Am UTV Hammers Championship at King of the Hammers on Thursday, as Kyle Chaney successfully defended his wins in each of the past two years over two grueling laps in Johnson Valley. Chaney, who qualified third overall, completed the race in 3:31:45, taking the overall win in his Pro Stock Turbo-class Can-Am Maverick X3. UTV Qualifying Larry Chen LG Pro Stock Turbo and Pro Mod UTV entries split the top six evenly, but it was Pro Mod that took the next three spots in the overall rankings. Phil Blurton edged out Cole Clark by under a minute for the second spot overall and class win, posting a 3:44:16 to Clark’s 3:45:04, while Dustin Jones backed up a win in the Toyo Tires Desert Challenge over the weekend with a third place finish in class. UTV Qualifying Aaron Linkous DSC Brothers Hunter and Cody Miller were fifth and sixth overall to complete the Pro Stock Turbo podium, while former Dakar Rally winner Casey Currie took the top spot in Open UTV at 10th overall. Other UTV class winners included Brian Tilton (20th overall, 6:00:51) in Sportsman Stock and Kyle Anderson (34th overall, 7:29:05) in Pro Stock NA. UTV Qualifying PH Kathy Durrett When all was said and done, this year’s UTV Hammers Championship lived up to the challenge of every other King of the Hammers event. Just 47 of the 107 starters on the day managed to complete two laps, and the names that missed out read like an all-star race of their own. Bryce Menzies failed to finish despite running first on corrected time after the first lap, as did Mike Park and CJ Greaves, who were scored fourth and sixth overall. RJ Anderson, Rodney VanEperen, Robby Gordon, and Johnny Greaves were among other big names who fell short of the finish line in 2023.
